Enhanced Free API Accounts: Recurring Credits and More Frequent Updates

Wikimedia Enterprise APIs provide modern developers and enterprise-level customers with robust, reliable access to Wikimedia’s vast community-driven content, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and supported projects. Built on the same infrastructure that powers our SLA-backed enterprise accounts, our free API tier now offers an expanded cost-free experience with significant enhancements.

Upgrades for Free API Accounts

On-Demand

5,000 requests per month!

Previously: 10,000 requests total

Snapshot API

Twice-monthly updates!

Previously: only once a month

With these upgrades free accounts now get 5,000 On-demand API requests each month, compared to the previous 10,000 limit that required contacting sales once exceeded. Credits refresh on the 1st of every month, allowing continuous use of the APIs, including access to the Structured Contents articles endpoint.

For bulk data users, Snapshot API updates have doubled, reducing the month-long content gap by making available new snapshots on the 2nd and 21st of each month. Premium offerings such as more On-demand credits, daily snapshot dumps, and access to our newly added Structured Contents snapshots require you to contact our sales team for pricing.

SDKs!

To further support independent developers, we’ve made some helpful improvements to our SDK offerings. We’ve added a Python SDK and added Auth flows and a directory of examples to both github repos.

  • Updated Go SDK (github link)
  • New Python SDK (github link)
  • Added an OAuth authentication library to both
  • Added Examples directory to both with multiple ways to effectively onboard

Availability and Support

For existing account holders, these new features are already enabled! Your account dashboard has been updated to show API usage and the amount of On-demand and Snapshot requests remaining. These credits reset on the 1st of each month.

New users can easily sign up for instant access to the expanded Snapshot and On-Demand API resources. Our updated reference documentation is available to help you maximize the potential of our endpoints for your projects.

These improvements underscore our commitment to delivering enterprise-grade API performance and access for everybody. For any questions, our support team is available through your user dashboard. If you require additional data or have specific inquiries, our sales and product teams are ready to assist you in scaling your usage of Wikimedia Enterprise APIs → contact sales.

We invite you to explore our APIs and leverage the full potential of Wikimedia’s knowledge base for your projects. Happy coding!
