Mistral AI partners with Wikimedia Enterprise to Leverage Open Knowledge for AI

Mistral AI and Wikimedia Enterprise are excited to announce a new strategic partnership. Data from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects is indispensable as a source of knowledge for Mistral’s AI projects, such as its AI assistant Le Chat. This partnership enables Mistral AI to leverage high-speed, high-volume, reliable use of Wikimedia’s free content through Wikimedia Enterprise APIs.

This partnership is built on shared values. Wikimedia projects allow everyone to use, share, and improve their freely licensed content as part of our mission to make knowledge available for everyone. Mistral AI aims to democratize access to cutting-edge and transparently built AI that respects your privacy. It’s equally important for both Wikimedia projects and Mistral AI that AI overviews and chatbots attribute their sources, such as by linking to a Wikipedia article.

Structured, Multilingual, Fresh Access to Human Knowledge

Mistral AI will use the Snapshot API to download a complete database of Wikimedia projects in several languages daily. Mistral AI will leverage Enterprise’s Structured Contents to receive Wikimedia project data already parsed into a neat JSON structure, eliminating the need to build complex parsers for HTML or Wikitext. These snapshots are used as a source of information for Mistral AI’s models. The data from projects such as Wikipedia is crucial to ensure AI models have access to trusted, reliable, and accurate human-curated information.

“Since our inception, we’ve trained our models on many languages to ensure access to AI for everyone, not only those in English-speaking countries. The Wikimedia Foundation’s values are aligned with this approach, and its unique language editions will be instrumental in pushing the accessibility of AI even further.” says Audrey Herblin-Stoop, Mistral AI’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications.

Collaboration with European AI Innovators shows the global scale of knowledge sharing

Adding Mistral AI to the list of partners using Wikimedia Enterprise for high-speed, bulk access to Wikimedia data is an exciting milestone: being the largest European player in the AI field, Mistral AI’s addition highlights that Enterprise’s audience is to be measured on a global scale.

In the spirit of ‘thinking globally, and acting locally’, Mistral AI (headquartered in France) has been introduced to Wikimedia France. This French nonprofit is committed to supporting Wikimedia projects and volunteers in the country. Wikimedia projects are built and maintained by an engaged community of editors and contributors, “so we’re overjoyed that Mistral AI acknowledges the importance of this community by opening up the conversation with Wikimedia France”, says Rémy Gerbet, Wikimedia France’s Executive Director.

This conversation will continue at the upcoming Wikimania conference in Paris. As the community celebrates Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary under the theme “Freedom, Equity, Reliability (Liberté, Équité, Fiabilité),” Mistral AI will join these critical discussions to help protect the future of free knowledge.

Leadership Excited about Mission-aligned Collaboration

Lane Becker, President of Wikimedia Enterprise, shares more: “We’re so excited to be partnering with one of the largest players in the AI field, especially since Mistral AI is also committed to open-source technology and accessibility.  I’m looking forward to seeing how Mistral AI will use the power of high-speed access to human knowledge through our APIs.”

Audrey Herblin-Stoop of Mistral AI adds: “The Wikimedia Foundation and Mistral share a common mission: to democratize knowledge through multilingual content. With its unparalleled language editions, Wikimedia will be a driving force in making our AI solutions accessible to all.
For us, a decentralized internet is of utmost importance, and that’s why we’re so excited to work together with the Wikimedia Foundation towards this goal.”
